Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue is a form of massage that focuses on releasing the deeper myofascial restrictions of the deeper muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the body.

It helps to:

  • free trapped nerves
  • oxygenate poorly circulated areas
  • allows the spine and joints to relax into realignment

By working together, the client and therapist can utilize gradual pressure to access deeper layers of a particular muscle area during the treatment.  Going deeper does not mean applying strength or force as this can cause the muscle to respond with more resistance.

Trigger Point & Neuro-Muscular Technique [NMT]

Through working with a client an area can be identified which may need additional manipulation, the muscle tissue may feel denser, and the client may experience pain and discomfort, they may refer pain to another area.  Referred pain is a defining symptom of a myofascial trigger point. By using palpation, the action of slowly feeling the area with a finger or thumb you can identify a change in tone or tension and sometimes by the way in which the client responds when a particular area is touched.  The muscle has been held in a tight position for some time and the nervous system by way of protecting this area will hold the damaged tissue in a shortened position. Thus, causing discomfort when attempting to stretch the area or when touched.

Helping to relieve sore tight tissue:

This is achieved through the therapist working with the client to achieve an informed measure of pressure on a level of 1-10 [1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest]. The optimal level is 7 the pressure is held for a maximum of 90 seconds and released slowly enabling the full benefits of release to be experienced.  Gentle massage is then applied to the area to encourage blood circulation to resume to the treated area of the muscle.
